WSP USA Project Cost Control Lead in AB, Canada

The Opportunity:

Project Cost Controls Lead for our Transportation Systems team. Reporting to the Sr. Project Controls Manager, the Cost Controller will support the Rail & Transit team in leading and managing major Rail & Transit projects in cost controlling, variance analysis, forecasting and reporting. You will also be involved in earned value management, change management and risk management.

What you can expect to do here:

Project Reporting and Communication:

  • Develop and implement project reporting requirements, including Monthly Performance Reports, status updates, performance review meetings and written deliverables.

  • Communicate project status and progress to stakeholders, including senior leadership, project team members, and external partners/clients.

  • Create and execute customized roles and responsibilities for team members while assessing submissions for accuracy, consistency, and quality.

  • Establish Cross-discipline coordination with other teams and individuals, including schedule, risk, document control and reporting specialists and project functions (including commercial and contract administration) to ensure harmonious integration and alignment of efforts.

Cost Estimation and Management:

  • Develop cost estimates and budgets for project activities, including labour, materials, equipment and sub-contracted services.

  • Utilize extensive cost control expertise to oversee, analyze, and oversee project and contract budgets, ensuring compliance with financial guidelines and promptly identifying any deviations.

  • Develop and implement cost management plans, processes and tools to control project expenditures and minimize associated risks.

Project Change Control:

  • Establish and conduct internal meetings, reviews, and communications to assess the necessity for and oversee the implementation of modifications to project scope, timeline, and budget.

  • Act as the principal assessor of potential changes by analyzing and evaluating them to ascertain their impact on project objectives and overall feasibility, ensuring that changes are socialized, reviewed and approved by appropriate internal and external stakeholders prior to implementation.

Managing/Leading Team:

  • Nurture the growth and development of team members, including facilitating skill enhancement.

  • Support in the improvement of existing and development of new cost reporting, including fully integrated cost dashboards.

  • Establish clear communication channels between your procurement team, subcontractors, and project managers. Ensure that everyone understands the project’s goals, timelines, and budget limitations.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience as a Project Cost Controller/Lead

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree (project management, finance or business preferred);

  • PMP Designation is required;

  • Project Management experience on large multidisciplinary projects;

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite and Outlook;

  • Highly advanced Microsoft Excel and/or Primavera 6 (P6) or Cost Estimating skills;

  • Adaptability and flexibility including the ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity and change;

  • Ability to work on several projects or tasks concurrently, manage time, organize, and set priorities;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • Strong interpersonal skills, as the role requires continuous interaction with team members;

  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal, including report writing, editing, and proofreading abilities;

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills are a must.
