WSP USA Senior Highway Engineer in Chicago, Illinois

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Highway Engineer for our Transportation team to sit in either Atlanta, GA or Chicago, IL ! The WSP Atlanta office serves clients from around the state on a wide variety of projects ranging from turn lanes and widening, intersection improvements and bridge replacements to urban interchange reconstructions and large design-build projects. This position is an excellent opportunity to continue to enhance design and production skills and build relationships within WSP as well as with a large number of clients around the state.

The Lead Civil Highway Engineer should have experience in leading design of civil, highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, drainage design and/or traditional delivery and alternative delivery projects. This position may function as the lead engineer projects for the state DOT and other local agency / municipal clients. Responsibilities may also include project management, contributing on pursuits, maintaining client relationships, design and QA/QC. This role will be a key contributor in assisting in managing daily activities of the Civil/Highway group.

Provides high level technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of facilities, roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment. Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installation, design, and construction specifications. .

Your Impact

  • Assist in leading and continue developing the Civil/Highway design team.

  • Providing guidance and mentoring of staff and direct work assignments.

  • Collaborating with management to determine long-range plans and objectives, including recommendations on project staffing.

  • Lead project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications.

  • Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities, etc.

  • Participate hands-on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E).

  • Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates standards and guidelines, correspondence, and/or prepare reports.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in large transportation and infrastructure projects.

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Significant experience leading design teams on GDOT and municipal projects (civil, highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, an drainage design).

  • Developing skills in project and staff management experience on civil transportation projects.

  • Experience with daily mentoring of junior staff.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

  • Experience on Alternative Delivery projects.

  • Experience with large transportation design build projects.

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or relevant field.
