WSP USA Practice Area Lead Traffic Engineer in Glastonbury, Connecticut

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Practice Area Lead Traffic Engineer for our Glastonbury, Connecticut office. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Traffic team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phase project investigation, remediation, analysis, improvement, planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation and their terminals. Responsibilities include capacity analyses, reviewing permitting, and engaging in the design, concept development, and construction of roadways, traffic patterns, and traffic signal design and timing. Provides situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities. Provides leadership with ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Function as the Project Manager and/or Traffic Engineering Lead for projects in Connecticut and other New England states, as needed

  • Provide technical analysis for a wide range of transportation infrastructure and land development projects

  • Perform technical review of Synchro, VISSIM, HCS, and other traffic engineering analysis software

  • Apply high-level traffic engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various project phases involving roadway transportation engineering work including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.

  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.

  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.

  • Design communications networks and traffic signal improvements to facilitate remote, real time corridor operations.

  • Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality or end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and implementing future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.

  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.

  • Coordinate, review and approve traffic design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

  • Work closely with developers and builders as a “trusted advisor” to determine the impact that a new structure, development, or construction project might have on the road system and makes recommendations to mitigate or offset the impact.

  • Initiate, direct, and apply the results of studies and program reviews in order to evaluate existing and projected roadway and transportation layouts, traffic impacts of proposed developments, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies.

  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.

  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.

  • Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.

  • Participate in a range of marketing and business development activities, including outreach and coordination with existing and potential clients, developing technical proposals, and interfacing through professional organizations.

  • Work cooperatively with clients and staff to expand the traffic engineering team.

  • Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 10+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience and construction projects.

  • Connecticut PE license is required, or ability to obtain the license in six months.

  • Demonstrated track record of working with state, municipal, and private clients throughout the state.

  • A strong background in transportation planning, traffic engineering and client/project management .

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering tools, including Highway Capacity Manual/Highway Capacity Software, Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM/VISUM, and other equivalent modeling and analysis

  • Knowledge of traffic control device design, including developing plans, specifications and estimates for construction projects.

  • Working knowledge of appropriate Federal Highway Administration, AASHTO, ConnDOT design manuals, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the AASHTO Green Book, and the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide.

  • Ability to establish partnerships with internal and external project management, client representatives, government agencies, and other organizations.

  • Positive attitude and people skills that constitute a team player.

  • Work cooperatively with staff to effectively deliver projects on deadlines, including managing multiple staff working on multiple projects.

  • Ability to train and mentor younger staff in the profession of traffic engineering.

  • Ability to market the skills of the traffic and transportation engineering practice.

  • Ability to work in a corporate environment, communicating with a wide range of professional skill sets.

  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

  • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar software is desirable, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.

  • PTOE certification is desirable.

  • Local to Connecticut area with strong business development and local market knowledge is highly preferred.
