The Deputy Group Technical Director (Deputy GTD) adds capacity, support, and deputises for the Group Technical Director who is working reduced hours. The GTD is accountable for technical excellence within S&I and is responsible for developing and delivering the technical strategy for Intelligent Infrastructure as part of the TLG (Technical Leadership Group). The GTD is responsible for the external profile of the business, maintaining a leading position in our chosen markets.

Your Team

This role sits within the Intelligent Infrastructure business within T&I and will contribute to our Systems and Infrastructure group. S&I comprises, Technology Strategy Advice; Systems Engineering; Data; Cyber; Connectivity, and Digital Infrastructure Design capabilities. You will report to the Group Technical Director.

Your Role

  • Deputises for the GTD in the General Leadership Team where the GTD leads on expertise and contributes to tactical and strategic decision making.

  • Deputises for the GTD in the TLG.

  • The Deputy GTD is the line manager for the Capability Leads in Systems and Infrastructure group.

Accountabilities:

The Deputy GTD leads activities in pursuit of accountabilities from the following:

Leadership

  • Develop and build a technical capability integrated across Intelligent Infrastructure, including a continuously improving market profile, promoting on-going relationships with academia, professional institutions and other recognised centres for developing technical excellence.

  • Coordinate with WSP businesses and groups to deliver the Discipline’s Expertise strategy, including the sharing of share best practice and innovation.

  • Provide overall leadership to the S&I Group alongside the Head of Business and Group Director.

  • Exhibit and demonstrate behaviours that align with company values through effective team working with open and honest communication.

  • Actively demonstrate leadership in Health & Safety, with a commitment to a Zero Harm culture. Conduct and formally report to the UK H&S Manager, at least one health and safety focused leadership engagement activity per month.

Technical

  • Accountable for the Group’s technical strategy. Responsible for setting the strategic technical agenda and objectives for the Group and, in partnership with the other GTDs and HoP, the Discipline.

  • Accountable for technical assurance across the Group and achievement of technical excellence in delivery.

  • Accountable for maintaining the technical competency of the Group and the ability to deliver technical excellence across all service lines within the Group.

  • Accountable for maintaining the Group’s profile within our chosen markets (existing and emerging).

Responsibilities

The Deputy GTD adds capacity to the GTD by leading activities in pursuit of selected responsibilities from the following to be agreed with the GTD:

Strategic Direction – provide strategic direction based on a thorough understanding and appreciation of trends and changes in our chosen markets and the services that those market will require. Develop, communicate and deliver the technical strategy for the Group aligned to Discipline, SBU and UK strategy.

Technical Excellence – lead the Group to embed a culture of technical excellence and innovation; coordinate with the other GTDs and Head of Profession. Promote the importance of technical excellence in all areas of delivery (advice, design, etc), continuous improvement and innovation. Identify and deliver R&D opportunities that will enable the achievement of the technical strategy; agree and manage budget with HoP.

Technical Delivery – develop new or improved approaches to project/service delivery, creating efficiencies and improving technical quality; maintaining sector and market leading position. Role model technical excellence in delivery. Embed technical assurance processes; create knowledge bank of good practice and “near misses”. Identify potentially high risk areas of project delivery that fall outside of our normal areas of competency.

Technical Development – develop, assess and maintain the technical competency of staff across the Group; including succession planning, technical development and recruitment. Understand where new skills will be required, plan suitable development and/or recruitment activities to maintain overall competency; undertake parallel exercise for skills that will no longer be required.

External Profile – develop annual plans of events, conferences and publications designed to maintain and enhance our profile within our chosen markets; work closely with UK and Global Marketing and Communications teams. Provide development opportunities for staff – authoring papers & articles, presenting at events, etc.

Strategic Growth – support regional, national and international business development activities through active participation in, and leadership of, market profile raising activities with strategic clients.

Client Relationship Management – actively involved in building and maintaining key client relationships at senior levels.

Bidding and Proposals – support and lead strategic bids through strategic direction, storyboarding, writing and reviewing.

Relationship Building – routinely creates, builds and sustains meaningful professional relationships with relevant external and internal groups; readily brings colleagues in to professional network, encouraging and enabling building of relationships for others.

Externally facing – maintains a high-level market profile through value driven and continuous engagement.

Problem Solving – able to apply appropriate, systematic processes to solve problems, looks for root causes (rather than presenting issues); proactively responds to, owns and solves problems.
