WSP USA Associate Petroleum Engineer in Houston, Texas

WSP invites you to get involved in projects with our Regulatory Engineering & Geological Services Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Petroleum Engineer for our Houston, TX office.

The Regulatory Engineering & Geological Services (REGS) Team supports clients with subsurface geological and engineering concerns for site selection, feasibility, permitting, and petitioning of underground injection control wells for nonhazardous/hazardous waste injection, cavern storage, and carbon sequestration. The team also interacts regularly with state and federal regulatory agencies on behalf of our clients.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage budgets and project cost controls for the REGs Team.

  • Manage and maintain schedules using Microsoft Project.

  • Review invoices prior to submittal to clients.

  • Participate in proposal writing efforts to support industrial waste disposal and carbon sequestration projects through project management activities.

  • Assist senior engineers and project managers with input and analysis for design concepts, construction, casing evaluations, root cause analysis findings, project controls, budgetary estimates, and project closeout reporting.

  • Complete high-quality deliverables on-time within project scope-of-work and budgeted hours.

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of geologists, engineers, CAD specialists, and administrative assistants to deliver successful projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.

  • Knowledge of petroleum engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.

  • 1-3 years of relevant operations experience in well-related activities (snubbing, coiled tubing, wireline, workovers, abandoning, and drilling).

  • 1-3 years of experience working as a petroleum engineer or project controls / project management.

  • 1-3 years of experience working with regular and sustained client and regulatory engagement.

  • Permitting experience with TCEQ, LDNR, US EPA or similar.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Experienced with technical writing and developing large technical documents. Writing samples may be requested during the interview.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Travel expected to be < 10%.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • This role is subject to a client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of the client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification.

  • Project management experience and training with multidisciplinary teams and multiple external stakeholders.

  • Permitting experience in Underground Injection Control (UIC) projects.

  • Injection well experience, including wastewater disposal, brine disposal, or enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

  • Experience with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) projects.
