WSP is currently initiating a search for a Deputy General Counsel for Alternative Project Delivery for our US operations.
The US Deputy General Counsel for Alternative Project Delivery (Alternative Delivery) leads the delivery of legal services to the business for Alternative Delivery projects across the US, including design-build, progressive design-build, integrated project delivery, P3, and other projects that fall within the US Alternative Delivery scope. The Deputy General Counsel for Alternative Delivery serves as legal advisor to the Alternative Delivery Team and Region management; collaborates with the WSP USA legal team; and oversees the legal aspects of pursuing and delivering Alternative Delivery projects. The Deputy General Counsel for Alternative Delivery reports directly to the WSP USA Chief General Counsel and is part of the WSP USA Legal Leadership Team.
Serving as WSP USA’s principal lawyer for Alternative Delivery;
Developing and implementing strategic plans to provide Alternative Delivery legal support;
Developing and implementing internal legal guidance for Alternative Delivery;
Working with operations, business line, and legal colleagues to develop, recommend, and facilitate communication and implementation of Alternative Delivery policies, procedures, processes, guidelines, practices, training, and improvements to same;
Working with operations, business line and legal colleagues to identify and communicate market terms to successfully facilitate risk-based contract negotiations;
Identifying, communicating, and implementing minimum standards for contract terms and conditions by project type, market sector and geography;
Working with operations, business line, and legal colleagues to identify and foster long term relationships with quality Alternative Delivery contractors, designers, owners and subconsultants;
Developing Alternative Delivery standard form agreements for use with trusted business partners to foster long term business relationships;
Working with operations, business line, and legal colleagues to assess Alternative Delivery risks and communicate reasonable risk mitigation strategies, proposed conditions to approval and recommendations for approval;
Developing, implementing, and leading training to educate legal, operations, and business line colleagues on key issues, risks, and mitigation strategies for Alternative Delivery projects;
Coordinating with in-house and outside insurance professionals to align and maintain WSP USA’s Alternative Delivery insurance practices with industry standards while effectively managing risk;
Reviewing and commenting on contract documents, negotiating professional services agreements with clients, and providing advice and support to the Alternative Delivery Team;
Developing, implementing, improving, and communicating the Alternate Delivery risk appetite statement and risk assessment process;
Collaborating with operations and business line colleagues to prepare Alternative Delivery teams to successfully execute and deliver Alternative Delivery projects;
Providing legal leadership in the development and negotiation of key project teaming agreements to achieve market terms;
Participating in periodic project reviews to support successful Alternative Delivery project performance;
Actively supporting and overseeing legal department colleagues in support of Alternative Delivery pursuits; and
Other duties as assigned.
Who You Are
Juris Doctorate degree from a law school approved for accreditation by the American Bar Association or equivalent education outside the US;
A member in good standing of the Bar of the supreme court of any state in which he or she has practiced law;
A minimum of 15 years of experience as an Alternative Delivery attorney in the infrastructure space, having attained a senior position of responsibility in a firm, a corporation, a government agency, or other organization comparable to WSP USA;
Experience as general counsel or deputy general counsel (or similar position) of an entity in the Architecture/Engineering or construction industry;
Knowledge of statutes, rules, and regulations relevant to the A/E, construction and government contracting industry;
Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards; personal and professional integrity; and discretion in maintaining confidentiality;
Excellent written and oral communication skills in public and private settings with diverse audiences; ability to translate complex legal issues for a lay audience and experience communicating complex legal issues to senior executives; and
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, able to collaborate with a diverse population, and ability to relate well with multiple stakeholders in the corporate organization.
