WSP USA Project Planner in Ottawa, Ontario

The Opportunity:

WSP is currently looking for an Intermediate Planner (Project Planner) to join our Urban and Community Planning team located at our Ottawa office. This position involves contribution to a wide range of planning projects, including land development applications, municipal planning projects and more. The successful candidate will support Project Managers and Senior Planners and enjoy a tremendous opportunity to grow professionally and explore many different career pathways and specializations.

What you can expect do here:

  • Provide professional planning consulting services to the land development industry, including project and development design and coordination of regulatory approvals;

  • Contribute to research and authorship of municipal planning documents such as official plans, zoning by-laws, and secondary plans;

  • Prepare planning policy and zoning interpretation for land development clients;

  • Prepare and submit land development applications;

  • Contribute to preparing environmental study reports and project file reports;

  • Monitor and stay current with planning trends as well as policy and legislative changes;

  • Conduct research and prepare planning studies on a range of municipal planning topics and present planning to senior staff, clients and the public;

  • Act as a liaison between clients and approval authorities;

  • Participate in WSP’s national Centres of Excellence, where like-minded professionals at WSP gather to share professional knowledge and improve our practice;

  • Work with multidisciplinary teams and non-planning subject matter experts to support policy, land development and environmental projects;

  • Support mentorship of early career professionals including delegating tasks;

  • Communicate with provincial government agencies, municipalities, private developers, special interest groups, organizations and institutions;

  • Collaborate and interact with a diverse range of audiences including the general public, community groups, businesses, committees and municipal councils;

  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and contribute to other business development activities; and

  • Coordinate and support public consultation events and processes.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • A degree in Community Planning, Urban Planning or related field;

  • 4+ years of progressively responsible community planning related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario planning system;

  • Full membership, or eligibility, of the Canadian Institute of Planners or Ontario Professional Planners Institute;

  • Strong creative, and verdict-making skills and the ability to reach sound verdicts and to resolve complex situations;

  • Experience with SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools or demonstrated knowledge in urban design and practices is an asset;

  • Excellent time-management skills and the ability to advance multiple priorities;

  • Previous experience in a planning role in a municipality or consultancy, working with multi-disciplinary professionals;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;

  • A strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work

  • Public consultation and engagement experience would be considered an asset; and

  • A Valid Ontario Driver’s License is a considered an asset.
