This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Environmental Scientist to join the Earth & Environment Team in the Pittsburgh, PA office. This entry-level position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on environmental projects. The work entails a combination of field and office-related activities, with a need to carefully follow instructions, document activities, work as part of a team and requires problem solving and proactive communication.

Your Impact

  • Assist with a variety of natural resources field support activities including: • jurisdictional wetland delineations and protected species surveys; • assessment of potential impacts to wetlands and/or protected species; • environmental oversight during construction to ensure compliance with permit conditions, and • wetland and stream mitigation and ecological restoration monitoring.

  • Support the preparation of regulatory permitting applications (e.g., U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404, PADEP Water Protection Permit Programs, Section 7 Endangered Species Act Coordination, Section 106 National Historic Preservation Act Coordination, etc.)

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • 0-1 year of experience working as an Early Career Environmental Scientist.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Wildlife Ecology, Wetland Ecology, Plant Biology, Fisheries, Soil Science or a comparable life science field.

  • Familiarity with Pennsylvania wetland ecology, soil ecology, wildlife ecology, and/or botany as well as relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance, and record keeping procedures .

  • Excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to both a scientific and non-scientific audience.

  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn and apply new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously and follow instruction.

  • Comfortable with being involved in a workflow that includes field work and completion of reporting tasks for projects in a timely manner.

  • Capable of working independently and effectively within a culturally and geographically diverse cross-functional team in executing project work.

  • Self-motivated, honest, reliable and dedicated individual with the ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond traditional work day and/or work week time periods.

  • Willingness to complete local and/or national travel with possible short-term or long-term assignments at project sites.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), mobile GPS field data collection and mapping technologies

  • Proficiency with ESRI Software (including ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcCatalog) and/or AutoCAD is a plus
