This Opportunity

WSP is looking for a skilled Senior Environmental Data Scientist & Visualization Specialist to help build our data science team in our Portland, ME office. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in defining and implementing our environmental data and visualization strategy, harnessing the power of intelligence to drive decision-making and enhance our offerings to our clients and stakeholders. Candidates should be passionate about sustainability and data, self-motivated and self-directed, collaborative, and able to produce high-quality work products. This role may suit someone currently in a data analytics role looking to move to a more mentorship/leadership-based career.

Your Impact

  • Manage project tasks related to environmental database design and management, qualitative/quantitative analysis, data processing, and data visualization.

  • Developing and maintaining business intelligence dashboards (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), visualizations, and analytical tools

  • Establishing ETL processes to collect, clean, and transform environmental data across a variety of data systems and structures.

  • Assist in coordinating the data science workload for projects managed both in Portland Maine and from other groups within the company and work with local leadership to balance workload and staffing needs.

  • Serve as a mentor to junior data scientists and allocate and review project tasks.

  • Developing trainings and internal education resources to support growth of internal analytics capabilities.

  • Oversees adherence to project plans and established business processes, including quality and project management standards.

  • Provides guidance related to successful delivery across the full project lifecycle to team members.

  • Proactively strategizes and anticipates risks and issues.

  • Communicate with project team members to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs.

  • Engage other Subject Matter Experts and technical support staff as needed.

  • Supporting business development activities with existing and prospective clients

  • Assist in workflow planning and software program integration for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 to 7 years of relevant project experience

  • Four-year Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science/Analysis, Environmental Science, Math, Computer Science, or related field or certification program.

  • Proficiency with relational databases (SQL-Server, EQuIS) and advanced knowledge of computer programming, coding, and testing (e.g. SQL Python, R).

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and Power BI.

  • Analytical skills, and familiarity with research techniques, modeling data, scanning and digitizing files, and experience maintaining records and databases with assigned projects required.

  • Creative problem-solving, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.

  • Strong production management capabilities and a proven understanding of project management methodologies.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, proactive communicator and problem-solver.

  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrates ownership and accountability for work.

  • Capability to work in a dynamic environment, including a demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of individuals from various backgrounds, including engineers; scientists; planners; GIS professionals; federal, tribal, and state government officials; and the public.

  • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

  • Strong track record of overseeing successful project delivery with a drive for quality product and financial excellence.

  • Solid work ethic and have the drive to be a leader in the company and in the professional community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred.

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS

  • Experience with ArcGIS Online (AGOL) environment

  • Experience with non-GIS engineering software

  • CAD/BIM/Digital Engineering Application Experience

  • Customization of workflows using Python

  • Experience with ArcGIS Arcade

  • Ability to travel occasionally, as needed (less than 10% travel anticipated)
