WSP USA Assistant, Bridge Inspector in Raleigh, North Carolina

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Assistant Bridge Inspector for our Mooresville, NC office. Be involved in projects with our Southeast Bridge Inspection Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include assistance with the inspection, load rating, testing, and design of bridges. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Perform Field work inspecting bridges throughout the southeast for deterioration and structural damage.

  • Assist with report writing for the inspection work completed in the fields.

  • Assist with planning and preparation of field inspection trips and maintaining field equipment and supplies.

  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures to ensure work is completed in a correct manner.

  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural plans, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, materials sampling, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for field inspection activities.

  • Under general supervision, assist with performing basic professional inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, construction, materials, controls, resources, layout, alignment, and elevation to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and construction or operating permits.

  • Provide basic technical assistance that accounts for the proper inspection, construction, and functioning of buildings, highways, roads, bridges, structures, infrastructure, equipment, and/or mechanical systems according to design standard specifications.

  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, scientists, engineers, inspectors, project control, and technicians on assigned inspection phases, checks, and tasks.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.

  • 0-2 years of prior construction inspection or NBIS bridge inspection experience.

  • Proficient self-discipline with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Physically capable of performing field work including climbing ladders (40ft or less) and in close quarters, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.

  • Proficiency/Comfortable using hand and power tools.

  • The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.

  • Valid state driver’s license.

  • Familiar with construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques.

  • Familiar with relevant construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.

  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.

  • Ability to read plans and specifications to provide entry-level technical assistance on various bridge repair designs and construction inspections.

  • Interest in UAS Drone flying.

  • Comfortable working at Heights (40ft+) and interest in working on Ropes (obtaining SPRAT Certification).
