WSP USA Field Safety Specialist - Onshore Drilling Operations in Salt Lake City, Utah

This Opportunity

WSP US Energy HSE is currently initiating a search for a seasoned professional to fill the role of Field Safety Specialist - Onshore Drilling Operations who will provide technical expertise and guidance to our project teams and support our Energy Sector clients across the country. The Field Safety Specialist reports to the Vice President, Health and Safety of our Energy Sector and assists our Field Site Supervisors who manage our onshore drilling projects supporting the Energy Storage Services (ESS) Team. The ESS team is a growing organization that manages, engineers, and oversees EPCM projects with work scopes related to drilling, well workovers, snubbing operations, and mechanical integrity testing as well as pipeline and surface ancillary construction projects. These operations support a wide-range of industries including hydrocarbon (both liquid and gas) storage in caverns, storage in depleted reservoirs, acid-gas injection, disposal wells (hazardous and non-hazardous), and various low carbon emerging technologies. In this role you will have the opportunity to be responsible for coordinating, managing, and implementing our project safety expectations for these projects throughout the United States. The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive field safety experience directly related to these projects and will be able to provide support in the field with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

Responsible for ensuring the field project team maintains compliance with our Project Site Safety Plan.

Effective working knowledge and understanding of OSHA Construction Standards as well as familiar with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Standards Institute (ANSI) and other safety standard programs.

Work independently while orienting project team members (employees and subcontractors) in HSE and safe well control requirements and procedures, conduct HSE inspections and compliance audits, life safety system audits, and review and prepare various safety programs and presentations.

Implement WSP’s safety programs and management systems on projects in the field.

Identify and quantify workplace hazards in the field and coordinate appropriate and effective mitigation measures through a defined hazard assessment process.

Preparation and Review of Project Safety Plans, reports, JSAs, and other safety related documents.

Provide safety oversight and management of 3rd party HSE subcontractors on project sites.

Maintain project safety documentation (electronic and hard copy).

Provide guidance, coaching and motivation to project team members directly associated with implementing HSE processes, procedures, systems, methods, and policies critical to the success of HSE in the field to ensure and maintain acceptable safety performance throughout the duration of the project.

Evaluate findings, make recommendations, and prepare written and verbal reports following site safety reviews and inspections.

Responsible project representative interacting with third party HSE project personnel, including subcontractors to ensure applicable OSHA regulations, API standards, NFPA Standards, as well as WSP and client HSE requirements are implemented.

Ensure safe/unsafe observations, near misses, and incidents (injury and non-injury, property/equipment damage and environmental impact) are accurately reported for each project.

Identify and communicate HSE improvement areas in field operations/projects.

Participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Analyses (RCAs).

Coordinate and perform physical inspections of the project site and field operations.

Offer fact-based, data-driven suggestions leading to measurable continuous improvement of the onsite HSE program.

Communicate effectively with clients, potential clients, subcontractors, and workers across all levels of the organization.

Serve as liaison to external regulatory agencies, compliance officers and client representatives as needed.

Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of field experience supporting HSE within the energy industry.

Must have a working understanding of U.S. Health and Safety laws and regulations, including OSHA and construction as well as familiarity with the OSHA general industry regulations.

Working knowledge of Behavioral Based Safety and its application in a project field setting.

Possess clear and concise verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with project and craft personnel.

Possess strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to readily identify key issues and risks and develop strategies or recommendations for improvement.

Ability to effectively/efficiently use Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, TEAMS, PowerPoint, and Outlook; Familiar with Smartphone Applications.

Valid US driver’s license and clear driving record

Experience with drilling and well control operations.

Desired Qualifications

BS/MS Occupation Safety

Be well versed on U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT hazmat materials handling, CPR, and first aid training are desired)

HAZWOPER/H2S trainer certification; other OSHA and HSE approved trainer certifications considered a plus

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) considered a plus

Experience in drilling and well control operations.

Able to communicate complex ideas and thought to all levels of an organization.

Experience participating/leading/facilitating incident investigations and reporting.

Familiarity with current technology and curricula available for improving HSE Management Systems and training.

Familiarity with software and computer applications associated with HSE Learning and Development including instructor lead training, Computer Based Training, and Web-based training.

Familiarity with processes and procedures associated with: Incident Investigations, EHS Information Management, Human Performance, Managing Safe Work, Process Safety Management, E-Suite, AED/CPR, HAZID, JSA, JSSP, Behavior Based Safety, HazCom, SDMS (Scientific Data Management System)

Experience planning, scheduling, and coordinating Contractor Leadership Engagements and Workshops.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

Demonstrated commitment to making safety personal for yourself and your co-workers.

Other Pertinent Information

  • Provide full-time health and safety support to dedicated project sites with the ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.

  • 100% Travel required.
