WSP USA Traction Power Engineer in San Francisco, California

This Opportunity

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of transit and rail traction power projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of rail and transit traction power substations and distribution systems. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. This individual will reside in the San Francisco, CA office.

Your Impact

  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, as-built data and manufacturers’ product data sheets for project development, design, and construction.

  • Assist with performing basic professional traction power engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing installations to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.

  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing basic technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues. Ensure that company technical policies and procedures are practiced during the execution of projects;

  • Develop design approaches and concepts for projects including Power Supply and Distribution Design for Light Rail, Heavy Rail, Commuter Rail, and High Speed Rail, utilizing overhead contact or third rail systems;

  • Model load flow with simulation software;

  • Prepare power system studies for AC and DC electrified railway systems;

  • Develop and review designs and technical specifications, meeting quality standards;

  • Develop cost estimates and projections;

  • Assist project managers in the coordination of project designs with other disciplines including attendance at project meetings;

  • Review shop drawings, record changes, and communicate directly with suppliers, contractors, and client representatives as required;

  • Support the installation and testing of traction power systems components and software;

  • Perform site investigations in substations and along railroad tracks;

  • Ability to perform site investigations and walk-downs in medium voltage (MV) substations and along electrified railroad

  • Utilize customized software to assist in performing traction power load flow simulations, develop relay protection schemes and perform grounding calculations.

  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, existing condition surveys, documentation, engineering studies and construction.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior transit and rail experience.

  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.

  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.

  • Familiarity with relevant engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.

  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.

  • Familiarity with electrical power engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD).

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $73,100.00 - $125,400.00

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
