WSP USA Graduate Electrical Engineer in Thornhill, Ontario

WSP’s Building/Transportation M&E Team is currently seeking an Electrical Designer to join our Electrical team, located in our Thornhill office. Reporting to the Electrical Team Leader, the Electrical Engineer will play an integral role in the delivery and execution of complex, challenging and innovative projects.

From a technical perspective, the Electrical Designer will be a technical resource, supporting senior engineers and project managers in the production of engineering drawings and design. In addition, the Electrical Designer will be involved in client and stakeholder meetings, representing and championing the WSP brand and mission objectives under direct supervision of senior engineers or discipline lead.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineering graduate looking to work with autonomy on some of Canada's most future-forward engineering projects. The successful candidate will be familiar with a variety of transportation, municipal, institutional, healthcare and commercial building projects. The individual will be responsible for the preparation calculation, conceptual and detail design, technical specification, installation details, permit / tender / post-tender services on various building projects, and perform contract admin (CA) services to review shop drawings, RFI’s, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Electrical design of power distribution, fire alarm, lighting, security, communications and audio visual systems for buildings.

  • Prepare drawings, specifications and reports necessary to deliver projects.

  • Design building systems in accordance with local and national codes and standards.

  • Develop lighting layouts, liaise with lighting vendors, manufacturers, distributors and other engineering disciplines.

  • Develop power distribution layouts, load calculations and feeder sizing.

  • Perform interdisciplinary coordination with Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Site Services, Signaling, Architectural, Project Management, and Construction Management disciplines per project requirement.

  • Perform and assist in construction administration by reviewing equipment shop drawings and conducting site visits and preparing change notices, site instructions, site reports etc.

  • Help Team Leader in day-to-day project tasks.

  • Have project management skills: supporting and reporting to project managers, Senior Engineers, and Electrical Manager.

  • Support project manager and design engineer throughout the project life cycle.

  • Prepare and review AutoCAD and Revit models for all electrical systems as mentioned above; perform clash detection with Revit 3D to find interdisciplinary 3D model clashes.

  • Perform individually and as a team member within a broader team.

  • Other duties as assigned/required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and registered as an EIT with PEO.

  • 1 to 3 years of experience with designing electrical systems for buildings is an asset.

  • Familiarity with commercial, and industrial projects including but not limited to: power distribution, fire alarm, lighting, security, communications and audio visual.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Visual Lighting and AGI 32.

  • Understanding of building electrical engineering requirements, knowledge of utility companies, authorities having jurisdiction, applicable codes and standards such as Ontario Building Code (OBC), OESC, CSA, NFPA, ASHRAE, IEEE etc.

  • Ability to work independently to deliver comprehensive designs and meet deadlines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with team members and other disciplines.

  • Detail oriented, Organized, Hard worker, and Team Player attitude.

  • Thorough familiarity with software used for engineering studies - arc flash, load, fault and coordination studies, lighting, grounding, etc. is an asset.
