About the Role:

We are looking for people with the potential to make a difference, pro-actively manage the project design requirements, schedules and risks and influence others to deliver successfully. Candidates must have excellent communication, problem solving and project / programme management skills and be willing to take on new challenges and possess experience in the delivery of significant and complex projects or programmes of work.

As a Design Manager you will need to provide strong leadership as part of integrated multi-disciplinary delivery teams within high demanding projects involving different challenges and complexities. You will have hands-on experience of working closely with client teams in a collaborative and integrated manner. You will be required to deliver our projects following the requirements of the WSP Business Management System, as well as to meet client expectations. Experience of working within the Energy, Defence, Rail or Water industries (with major UK client organisations) is essential and the use of the client systems and processes will be advantageous.

A typical week would include:

  • Being accountable for establishing & maintaining a professional design team capable of delivering the required services to the client organisation.

  • Establishing a robust processes and procedures to manage the design, in consultation and engagement with the project manager, wider design team, commercial and administration departments.

  • Delivering accurate and informative periodic project reports and direct the project accordingly.

  • Managing interfaces between project and client teams and advising on risk mitigation measures.

  • Leading Change Management Procedures for the project and ensure the change control log is updated accordingly. Managing changes and delays that have impacted the project and propose how these should be resolved / mitigated.

  • Client Focused: Understand the objectives and filter the vision / information through to the delivery team via effective communication streams to improve efficiency, clarity and manage expectations.

  • Holistic Overview: Have a project wide understanding of the design process and be able to coordinate across all disciplines internal and external, ensuring quality and add overall value to the project.

  • Future Ready: Able to plan-ahead and at the same time identify and troubleshoot any immediate issues that may arise through the project. Anticipate requirements, changes and risks and take appropriate actions.

  • Leadership: Managing the various consultants in the team through engagement and involvement on critical design issues. Setting clear goals and supporting the team to manage challenges.

  • Organisation: Planning and keeping track of documentation by putting in place appropriate management and assurance controls for design certainty. Being able to manage your time and the wider teams time effectively and efficiently.

Qualifications:

  • Degree, in relevant engineering, design or management discipline.

  • Chartered (or approaching) Membership of a relevant professional body.

  • ARB / RIBA / MICE / MIET / APM / PMI / PRINCE2 / Six Sigma certifications would be an advantage.

  • Contract management experience and/or accreditations would be an advantage.

  • Experience of working in major projects with proven Client-side project delivery (design or construction)
