We are seeking a Geotechnical / Rock Mechanics Engineer to join our team to support a variety of Geotechnical / Rock Mechanics projects in the Mining, Infrastructure and GeoEnergy sectors.

  • Working on the delivery of open pit and underground mine geotechnical services projects

  • Rock mass characterisation, including analyses and interpretation of borehole and laboratory data to characterise material and fracture properties for use in geotechnical design

  • Rock mass classification using standard industry tools such as Q, RMR and GSI and statistical analysis

  • Development of ground models using 3D modelling packages such Leapfrog Geo

  • Rock mass stability assessments using empirical, analytical and numerical tools for rock slopes and underground excavations

  • Geotechnical analysis with numerical modelling software including Itasca (FLAC2D, FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC) Rocscience suite, FracMan

  • Availability to travel in the UK and internationally to deliver projects to our clients, promoting and presenting WSP in a professional manner at all times in line with our code of conduct and professional expectations associated with your role.

  • Field work for geotechnical core logging and site inspections during ground investigations and rock face mapping

  • Liaise with the global mining and ground engineering networks, which includes specialists within WSP both nationally and internationally

YOUR TEAM

  • You will be joining a multidisciplinary team of experts in the UK, with a strong link with our global mining and ground engineering business in delivering work to our clients within all WSP regions.

  • You will collaborate with talented and diverse professionals for delivering a range of projects across the mining industry (open pit and underground mines), through to infrastructure (tunnel and cavern engineering, shaft sinking), and the energy sector (underground gas storage, hydropower, geothermal).

  • Our Mining team helps clients optimise performance, boost profitability, and operate responsibly. We have a comprehensive understanding of the mining industry and current issues including decarbonisation and understand future ready strategies are critical to countering these issues, capitalising on opportunities, and adding value to businesses.

  • Relevant (post-degree) experience

  • Willingness and desire to learn and apply methods for solving rock engineering problems

  • Familiarity with process and concepts for ground characterisation and geotechnical design

  • Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate qualification in rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering,

  • Registered Professional Membership or working towards.

  • Knowledge of numerical modelling software including Itasca (FLAC2D, FLAC3D, UDEC ,3DEC) and Rocscience suite

  • Programming language experience using Python and CAD knowledge using Rhino / Grasshopper will be an asset

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
